The spatial and temporal timescales of rocky coast research has been integrated in a new commentary:
2017) The temporal and spatial scales of rocky coast geomorphology: A Commentary. Earth Surf. Process. Landforms, doi: 10.1002/esp.4150.
, , and (The authors David Kennedy, Martin Coombes and Derek Mottershead identified a key temporal and spatial gap in current research is evident. The seasonal to annual time frames are absent from studies, as are spatial scales spanning hundreds of metres to kilometres. This time frame and scale is likely to be critical in understanding the future evolution of rocky coasts in the near term especially their response to climate change.
